Recommendations for Addressing AI in Your Syllabus
Generative Artifical Intelligence:
Include a statement in your syllabus that clearly communicates expectations about student use of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in your course. The Academic Honesty policy in the Student Code of Conduct already states that:
(a) The work, words, or ideas from a third party need proper attribution.
(b) Unauthorized aid in student work constitutes academic dishonesty.
In your syllabus, state how and why students may or may not use generative AI tools. Take time to discuss this with students in class. Below are a few sample statements.
Statement #1:
Assignments in this course are to reflect each student's own learning, thinking, and creating. In order to cultivate and evaluate each student's individual work, the use of generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, in any part of completing an assignment is prohibited as an unauthorized aid.
Statement #2:
Students may use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, in assignments for this course. As with other third-party sources, if you use the work, words, or ideas from a generative AI tool in an assignment, you must properly quote and cite that source. Proper attribution of a generative AI tool includes the prompt used, the date accessed, and the web address or URL accessed. Be aware that generative AI tools do not produce peer-reviewed scholarship, so you will need to evaluate the quality of the information before using it in an assignment.
Statement #3:
The possibilities, benefits, and pitfalls of technology are part of the learning outcomes for this course. As such, students must use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, in specified assignments. When using the work, words, or ideas from a generative AI tool in an assignment, you must properly quote and cite that source. Proper attribution of a generative AI tool includes the prompt used, the date accessed, and the web address or URL accessed. Be aware that generative AI tools do not produce peer-reviewed scholarship, so you will need to evaluate the quality of the information before using it in an assignment.
