If you choose to implement its use, it is imperative that you make a practice exam available to students to test the process out before the actual exam. Have students take the practice exam as far in advance of your actual exam as possible so they have time to troubleshoot any problems.
Students can tell if an exam requires them to use Respondus by looking at the title of the exam in Blackboard. If it says “Requires Respondus LockDown Browser® ”, then they will need to use Respondus. If the title also says “Webcam”, then they will need to have a working webcam on their computer as well.
Microsoft Windows computers, Macs, and iPads work best with Respondus. LockDown Browser® is very limited on Chromebooks; so you may need to provide alternative assessments for students using Chromebooks or who do not have a Microsoft Windows, Mac, or iPad device. Contact john.randall@cui.edu to discuss any available workarounds for students without supported devices.
Students will need to use this institution-specific download hyperlink to install Respondus LockDown Browser.
LockDown Browser® is a custom browser that restricts the online testing environment.
Respondus Monitor® builds upon the power of LockDown Browser®, using your webcam and video analytics to monitor activity during an online test. You must already have LockDown Browser® installed to use Monitor®.
Dr. John Randall covers tools for online proctoring of exams, tests, and quizzes. Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor work with Blackboard to help discourage academic dishonesty in the online learning environment.
